The Ideal Training Setting
Family-owned and operated by the Walsh family, Shagbark farm is conveniently
located 30 minutes from Turfway Park racetrack in Florence, KY, just
south of the greater Cincinnati, OH metro area. Shagbark farm is within
easy access to the top veterinarians, farriers, equine dentists and exercise
riders needed to keep our horses in competitive form.
Shagbark Farm creates the perfect location for breaking yearlings, much
needed lay-ups and for training of Thoroughbred racehorses. The following
amenities are included:
- 300 acres of peace and quiet to create a positive working environment
for horses
- Groomed ½ mile training track for workouts
- Large flat paddocks for plentiful turn-out
- Two large barns with 10’ x 10’ stalls filled with deep
bedding
- Indoor riding arena for all-weather training
- Large, sand-filled round pen for safe start of yearlings
- Miles of trails through the woods

Lay-Ups to Rest and Recharge Your Thoroughbreds
Ryan Walsh Racing Stable and Shagbark Farm can provide lay-up services
to all Thoroughbreds in need of rest during their stressful racing careers.
As a lay-up facility with 300 acres, we have the stalls and paddocks
to handle any needs you may have. The pastures are rich with deep, green
grass providing the ideal environment for resting and revitalizing your
horses.
Shagbark Farm maintains a groomed ½ mile training track. If you
would like to have your horses exercised during their stay, Ryan Walsh
Racing Stable can provide exercise riders, handlers and grooms to take
care of your training requirements.
Shagbark Farm is located in northern Kentucky just 30 minutes from Turfway
Park racetrack and the greater Cincinnati, OH area. We can transport

Breaking Yearlings Correctly to have Long and Productive Careers
There’s a certain quality that goes into the early training lessons
of these young athletes. To have long and productive careers, Ryan Walsh
Racing Stable believes yearlings need to be started correctly–without
overreaching their physical capabilities.
Walsh Racing Stable begins breaking yearlings in early October. Our
full-time staff trainer is an expert in breaking and starting yearlings.
He has a special touch and utilizes the indoor arena and round pen to
begin proper ground training. Ryan Walsh Racing Stable maintains a qualified
staff of exercise riders, handlers and grooms who understand the special

Day Training Rate
Our day training rate on the race track is a very reasonable $55 per
day plus ten percent commission for first, second or third placement.
Extras added to your detailed monthly statement include veterinarian
fees, pony fees for races and a blacksmith charge. These combined extras
will roughly average out to less than $400 per month. Day rates at Shagbark
