Day-to-day Running Costs

The running costs of keeping your horse in training include:

• Daily training fee (exercising and training your horse, high-quality feed, hay and nutrition program)
• Veterinary and blacksmith fees
• Transport costs to and from the races
• Entry fees for races and jockey’s riding fees
• Registration fees

Purses are Increasing

Thoroughbred horse racing is undergoing many positive changes resulting in larger race purses. For example, several states allow slot machine and casino-type gambling at the racetrack. The winnings from these games are used to substantially subsidize the Thoroughbred race purses. States like West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Iowa have seen remarkable increases in their purse structure. Other states have just passed referendums allowing slots at their racetracks so as not to lose gambling dollars to neighboring states.

Secondly, racetracks such as Turfway Park in Florence, KY and Keeneland in Lexington, KY, are implementing a brand new state-of-the-art racing surface called Polytrack. The surface has been proven in Europe for years to substantially reduce injuries and lost racing days due to poor track conditions.
